Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera says that the 10 per cent telecommunication levy imposed on mobile and broadband internet will removed with effect from September 01.

The telecommunication levy only on pre-paid cards will be removed in this manner.

Speaking at a press briefing in Colombo today (17), the minister said that service providers have come to an agreement with them that in addition to the 10% the government is reducing, they will be adding 10% more data to the consumer.

“They’re also chipping in to make this work. So this is a very, very good deal for those who use the internet and everyone who has a smart phone can really have more data now.”
