MBABANE – It is now official, Swazi Mobile has a new chairman. The mobile company yesterday confirmed Michelo Shakantu as its new Chairman, following the death of businessman Victor Gamedze.

Shakantu is widely known as the Inyatsi Construction Group Holdings Limited Executive Chairman.
The confirmation was made in yesterday’s media briefing at the Swazi Mobile Head Office by Chief Executive Officer Jeff Penberton. He was responding to questions from the media regarding the position of chairman following the passing away of Gamedze, who was gunned down on January 14, 2017.

Since his death, people have been asking themselves the question of who was going to take over the reins as chairman of Swaziland’s second mobile operator.
According to Penberton, the appointment was made by the Swazi Mobile Board of Directors in its meeting late last month.

Swazi Mobile, according to a press release issued yesterday, lists its current shareholders as Swaziland National Provident Fund (SNPF), CherryBite (Pty) Ltd, Stage 1 Connections, Swaziland Investment Development Corporation and the share reward recipients.
Shakantu’s appointment will not come as a shock to many as since the inception of Swazi Mobile, he was known as the main co-director in the company together with the late Gamedze.

Swazi Mobile was authorised to roll out a national network and provide voice, data and value added services on a national basis in December last year by the Swaziland Communications Commission (SCCOM), which awarded the company an operating licence.

The decision confirmed Swazi Mobile Limited to be the third telecommunications service provider in the country, joining Swazi MTN Limited and the Swaziland Post and Telecommunications Corporation (SPTC).

Currently, the company boasts of over 150 000 subscribers, some of whom (14 000) have qualified in its share offer reward programme.
During yesterday’s press briefing, Penberton announced that Swazi Mobile would be listing 30 per cent of the company’s shares on the Swaziland Stock Exchange (SSX) in fulfillment of a condition of the licence it was awarded by SCCOM.
