As a software development model, open source has proven that it can deliver rapid, cost-effective implementations of some of the most used applications in the world like the Android operating system or Mozila's Firefox browser. But the adoption of open source for core, mission-critical operational platforms for the network has not been a top priority for service providers and the vendors that serve them… until now.

In a rapidly evolving market with over-the-top (OTT) players like Google and Amazon competing for core telecommunications business, coupled with increasingly sophisticated customers demanding better service at a lower price, service providers need to find ways to re-invent the way they do business.

Adopting new technologies like network virtualization can help service providers face today's challenges and grasp tomorrow's opportunities. But one of the greatest barriers to the adoption of network virtualization has been standardization. There is a growing consensus in the industry today that open source can address the need for standardization, thanks to the contribution of the open source community.

Service providers are increasingly recognizing that open source can help them to accelerate development and maturity of operational platforms, and reduce vendor dependency/lock-in as well as to achieve increased levels of standardization. Amdocs has adopted an open source first approach across its open network portfolio. A leader in open-source initiatives from an early stage, Amdocs is a co-creator of Open ECOMP with AT&T and a leader and key contributor in the transition to Open Network Automation Platform (ONAP) under the auspices of the Linux Foundation, and through partnerships with ONAP early adopters like Bell and Orange.

As part of our role in the Linux Foundation's ONAP, Amdocs is proud to host the Israel day of the Open Source Network (OSN) tour, a free Linux Foundation event which is bringing together the region's leading experts in open source initiatives for telecommunications service providers.

The event will take place at Amdocs offices in Raanana today.
